Anthroposophical wall mirror. 20th century. Circa 1930s-1950s.
Hand carved wooden mirror made and organically shaped according to the Anthroposophical principles – the early c20th spiritual philosophy founded by Rudolf Steiner in Switzerland. The broad philosophy extended to the arts and crafts in a distinctive, often organic, architectural/design style (a key example being the Goetheanum in Dornach). Anthroposophy became deeply embedded in Dutch culture – this mirror came out of the Dutch town of Zeist which has long been the Dutch centre of the movement. It has a great colour and age related patina.
