‘Cobra’ lamp for Arredoluce, Italy. 1962 by Italian light designer and founder of Arredoluce Angelo Lelli. This table lamp/sculpture model ‘12919’ known as ‘il Cobra’ by the workers at Arredoluce for its association with the form of the snake has pivoting black oxide steel magnetized “eyeball” socket set into what is in effect a midcentury biomorphic standing sculpture. The quality of manufacture of these lamps is outstanding – they have a good substantial feel and weight to them. This one is completely original and in superb condition (no deterioration of the original finish as is common with these lamps, and with original plug and bulb).
A large and heavy abstract lead sculpture executed by an unknown artist in the 1960s. Its overall impression is of a modern dynamic figure in molten lead; a figure morphing into various biomorphic or abstract forms.
The French mid-century sculptor and ceramicist Pol Chambost had already discovered and mastered ceramics by his mid-20s. From the start his work was know for its biomorphic forms and bold colours. As a prolific maker Chambost established himself as an important maker in the context of the French midcentury art and design world. His work was largely forgotten until revived in the early 2000s. Since then his works have become increasingly sought after and reach very healthy sums at auction.
This jug/pitcher is typical of his work. The model number 835 is inscribed to the underside alongside his signature.
