Alexander Kropholler (Nl.1881-1973)


Rare side chairs in teak wood. Circa 1930s.

Alexander Kropholler was a trained carpenter and a self-taught architect whose work was influenced by that other great name in Dutch architecture H.P. Berlage. Traditionalist and historical architecture was of particular importance to his work, and he incorporated overt references to established vernaculars from Medieval to 17th century historical buildings as well as the designs of earlier Egyptian and Gothic revival styles.
In 1908 Kropholler converted to Roman Catholicism. He was looking for what he thought to be a particular Dutch style; sober, earnest and functional. This is evident in the meticulous design of these chairs.
The modern and enduring appeal of the chairs lies in the ‘Truth to material’ principles and skilful structuralism; their intricate construction is revealed and featured in the design.

(Attrib.) Josef Hoffmann (Austria 1870-1956)

Model 728 Fledermaus Chairs and table attributed to Josef Hoffmann for J & J. Kohn. Early c20th.

Stained and lacquered beech wood. The chairs have a later Wiener Werkstätte fabric.

The chairs were originally designed for the famous Fledermaus Cabaret and manufactured by the firm of Jacob and Josef Kohn around 1910. In very nice condition.
The beechwood has a warm patina from the oxblood red coloured finish.
These chairs were purchased together with the small cafe table. Although the chairs are unmarked, the table is marked with the Kohn firm label.

Piet Klaarhamer (Nl 1874-1954)

Oak side chair with green leatherette upholstery. Circa 1917.

The early designs of modernist architect Piet Klaarhamer use simple, rudimentary constructions, and demonstrate an honest use of the materials used.

This important chair was the first piece of furniture that Klaarhamer designed in 1917 with manufacture in mind – However it was ultimately manufactured in very limited numbers by company called NV Nederlandse Meubel en Houtwarenfabriek in Zaandam.

Klaarhamer’s designs had a clear influence on his students, including the well-known architects Piet Elling and Gerrit Rietveld.
The design of this particular model (without arms) inspired Rietveld in the design of his well known ‘Military Chair’ in 1923. It is a design that is well documented in the monograph on Klaarhamer written by author/historians Marijke Kuper & Monique Teunissen*. This book details a letter (with a sketch of the chair) by Gerrit Rietveld to the architect J.J.P Oud.

Tulip chairs x8

Eero Saarinen (Finland/USA 1910-1961)

Knoll International. 1960s.

A rare set of original vintage model ‘Tulip’ chairs (these are the early versions with fixed bases).

Eero Saarinen’s Iconic Tulip Armchairs were designed in 1955-56 as part of his Pedestal Collection for Knoll. Saarinen sought to solve the issue of “the slum of legs” in traditional furniture by creating a chair with a single pedestal base, giving it a clean, sculptural appearance. While he originally envisioned the chair being made entirely of one material, technological limitations led to the use of a fiberglass seat and an aluminum base, painted to appear as a unified piece. The design, resembling both a flower and a wineglass, became revolutionary for its organic shape and simplicity. Its futuristic aesthetic, often associated with the Space Age, made it a staple of mid-century modern design.

Very good condition – The bases have been restored and the fiberglass shells have been cleaned. They have new cushions in chartreuse yellow/green upholstery with zip covers which are anchored to the seats using Velcro pieces to the underside.

Gerrit Rietveld Crate chairs

Gerrit Rietveld (Nl. 1888-1964)

Pair of 1970s Crate chairs manufactured by Gerard A. van de Groenekan. (Both with burnished marks to the underside). These particular chairs were commissioned by the original owner.

They are in superb condition; both having their original lightly whitened waxed surfaces.

Jan den Drijver De Stijl armchairs. 1930s

Jan den Drijver (Johannes Hendrik Bastiaan den Drijver) Netherlands, 1903-1993.

Important pair of armchairs designed and manufactured during Jan den Drijver’s formative years in The Hague when he established ‘Woningrichting De Stijl’, a showroom and workshop which lasted for only three years between 1933-36. (One chair retains its original paper label).

Beech wood with upholstered seats & back rests.
