Gerrit Rietveld Crate Chairs

Pair of 1970s Crate chairs manufacture by Gerard A. van de Groenekan. Both with burnished marks below. The chairs were produced by commission from the original owner.

They are in superb condition; both having a thin milky white wax/varnish surface.

Finely engineered x-frame stools.

Pair of steel modernist/ minimal stools. 1960s.

The beauty of these stools is both in their simplicity and their detail; the quality of engineering. (more photos available on request). The retain their original cream coloured cushions that clip onto a series of small holes to the steel seats.

Dom Hans van der Laan church alter/table. 1950s-60s

A large Bossche School alter table. Designed by the Dutch Benedictine monk/architect Dom Hans vd Laan. The metal and stone decorative elements across the side were believed to have been designed by Wim van Hooff (1918-2002) who was a painter and colour consultant who developed his own colour theories in addition to making an important contribution to the architecture of the Bossche School.

This rare example of Van der Laan’s designs was part of a collection of furniture came from a post-war church in Amstelveen in The Netherlands.

Jan Slothouber & William Graatsma (Dutch c20th+)

Five rare modular cubes from the 1970s.

Laminated plywood.

The Dutch artist/designer team of Slothouber & Graatsma established themselves from the 1950s as artist/designers with the cube form as their key motif around which they developed various principles of cubic construction alongside multiples and variations thereof. Despite its restrictions they admired the cube for its clarity of form. They applied their thinking around it to a variety of objects, and artworks from small jewellery-scale 3d models and games to larger installation works.
Highly driven personalities, they considered themselves as discoverers of ‘the many applications of the democratic system of cubics’; a system that would ostensively act to counter the rise of the expressive individualism in post-WWII culture. (They later established the CCC_the Centre for Cubic Constructions as a forum for promoting their ideas).
Due to their diverse and multidisciplinary output they were never to become global names – But they were a highly respected creative team (representing The Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 1970)…Donald Judd for one was a great admirer of their work.
