Large Art Deco coffee table. Circa 1930s

131 x 86 x 52cm high. Solid oak and glass.

Unique early c20th coffee table with its original feature glass top that seems to conjoin both Art Deco and Brutalist styles. The piece combines the robust qualities of the Brutalist style evident in its chunky wooden base with the elegance of the Art Deco style manifested in the pictorial glass top. These apparent combined qualities in this one piece that gives the table its unique style and character.
The deeply moulded relief images in the thick glass depicts two seagulls in flight. The underside of the glass is textured whereas the top is almost smooth.

The curved fan shape of this table (it is narrower at the front than the back) would make it highly suitable for particular spaces such as between sofas or in front of a curved sofa.

Bumper table

Martin Visser (Nl. 1922-2009)

The bumper table is undoubtedly Martin Visser’s most intriguing design, the baroque translation from 1965 of his table base tz06 from the early 1960s. The development of Martin Visser’s bumper table provides insight into and understanding of his design processes: The table’s main feature is its reversible tripod base, later called ‘Abusir’ – Seemingly simple with the three points on the floor and three points to carry the top (in the history of furniture the tripod table is known to be the most stable structure).

Only two series were produced in very limited numbers due to the technical difficulties of manufacturing the base. Spectrum Furniture (‘t Spectrum) manufactured the table as several versions that varied in height, width, materials and finishes – this version with the white carrara marble top.

1960s Dutch salon table

Designer/Maker unknown. Circa 1960s.

A beautifully proportioned and simply constructed limed oak wood low/salon table. It has a series of small plywood inserts visible on the shorter sides and visible box joints where the legs attach to the table top. The surface has been lime waxed.

Although it cannot be verified we believe that the table may be a design by Hein Stolle for ‘t Spectrum furniture.
