Piet Klaarhamer (Nl 1874-1954)

Pair of oak chairs with green leatherette upholstery. Circa 1917.

The early designs of modernist architect Piet Klaarhamer use simple, rudimentary constructions, and demonstrate an honest use of the materials used.

We have two of these chairs for sale – These important chairs were the first pieces of furniture that Klaarhamer designed that were produced in larger quantities around 1917, (although probably still manufactured in very limited numbers) by company called NV Nederlandse Meubel en Houtwarenfabriek in Zaandam.

Klaarhamer’s designs had a clear influence on his students, including the well-known architects Piet Elling and Gerrit Rietveld.
The design of this particular model (without arms) inspired Rietveld in the design of his well known ‘Military Chair’ in 1923. It is a design that is well documented in the monograph on Klaarhamer written by author/historians Marijke Kuper & Monique Teunissen*. This book details a letter (with a sketch of the chair) by Gerrit Rietveld to the architect J.J.P Oud.

Liberty & Co ‘Thebes stool‘. Designed by Leonard Wyburd. Mahogany 44 x 40 x 34cm high.

(Evidence of a previous Liberty & Co label to underside).

Manufactured circa 1880s whilst Wyburd was head of the furniture and decoration studio at Liberty’s of London.
As the stool’s name implies, the design of this tripod stool was modelled on ancient Egyptian typologies. The design was the basis of similar stools presented later by both Josef Frank and Adolf Loos (as seen at the Möbelmuseum Wien).

Amsterdam School / arts & crafts console

Various items including (1) an Amsterdam School console/hall table with two drawers – The symmetrical form of the console narrows towards the front and has four amazing hand-crafted scallop shaped handles. The front of the two drawers has an elegant double wave sculptural form.

Inside, the top drawer has a green baize lining (once used for cutlery). This console seems to date from between the early to mid-c20th and is beautifully constructed from solid oak. We decided to leave it with its original patina (the top has a few light marks but otherwise it is in good solid condition). 100 x 46.5 x 89cm high.

(2) A monumental Dutch Amsterdam School floor lamp made from mahogany with double fitted lamps and an uplighter lamp. 186cm high and 71cm wide.

Ceramic pitcher

Pol Chambost (France 1906-1983)

Model 835. Ceramic with yellow glaze.

The French mid-century sculptor and ceramicist Pol Chambost had already discovered and mastered ceramics by his mid-20s. From the start his work was know for its biomorphic forms and bold colours. As a prolific maker Chambost established himself as an important maker in the context of the French midcentury art and design world. His work was largely forgotten until revived in the early 2000s. Since then his works have become increasingly sought after and reach very healthy sums at auction.

This jug/pitcher is typical of his work. The model number 835 is inscribed to the underside alongside his signature.
